Dr. Paul Walker receives Kamran S. Moghissi MD Endowed Faculty Award for Excellence in Basic Science Teaching

walkerDr. Paul Walker, Professor of Ophthalmology, Visual and Anatomical Sciences, was recently honored to receive the Kamran S. Moghissi MD Endowed Faculty Award for Excellence in Basic Science Teaching during the 2018 School of Medicine Faculty Awards Ceremony held in November.

This award noted Dr. Walker's significant contributions to the development of the new Yr-1 medical curriculum entitled 'Fundamentals of the Healthy Patient' launched at the beginning of the 2018-19 academic year. 

Dr. Walker serves as discipline director of Gross Anatomy, a central element of the new curriculum, and directs two of the systems units: 'Musculoskeletal, Dermatology, & Peripheral Nervous System' and 'Reproductive & Endocrinology Systems'.  He is also a significant contributor to neuroscience teaching in the Central Nervous System unit.  

Dr. Walker was also acknowledged for teaching excellence in gross anatomy to Post Baccalaureate students, as well as to Otolaryngology and Maxillofacial Surgery residents enrolled in the Surgical Anatomy of the Head & Neck course as part of Continuing Medical Education.

This past year, Dr. Walker oversaw the renovation of the gross anatomy laboratories in collaboration with School of Medicine Leadership to include the installation of new audiovisual technologies that are expected to enhance the department's longitudinal role in physician training beyond the first year of medical school.
