Biography

Dr. Ireland has taught human gross anatomy at the WSU School of Medicine since 1986. He was the course director from 2001-2015 and continues on as the Laboratory Co-Director. Dr. Ireland also oversees 4th year student teaching in the gross anatomy lab. During the summer, he assists in directing the efforts of 2nd year medical students preparing anatomical specimens for use by incoming medical students and helps in the laboratory instruction of post-baccalaureate students. In addition, he has organized numerous teaching components of CME accredited activities in regional anesthesiology and echocardiography. During his research career, Dr. Ireland has been funded by the NIH and various local funding agencies. He has published 45 peer-reviewed articles mainly examining the cell biology of vertebrate lens development and the maintenance of lens clarity.
