Dr. Elizabeth Berger Appointed to Serve on NIH Pathophysiology of Eye Disease Study Section
Dr. Elizabeth (Beth) Berger has been appointed by the Director, National Institutes of Health (NIH), as a member of the Pathophysiology of Eye Disease – 1 (PED1) Study Section, Center for Scientific Review, for the term beginning July 1, 2023, and ending June 30, 2027. NIH study sections play a critical role in the peer review process by evaluating grant applications, advising on funding decisions, and helping shape the direction of scientific research nationwide.
Dr. Berger was selected for this role based on her research accomplishments, scholarly publications, and recognized leadership in the field of ocular immunopathogenesis and therapeutic development. This appointment reflects her scientific expertise as well as her ability to provide thoughtful, objective evaluation – qualities essential to the mission of NIH study sections.
Dr. Berger is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology, Visual & Anatomical Sciences at Wayne State University School of Medicine. She also serves as Director of the MS Program in Anatomy & Cell Biology and Vice-Chair of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Her research, supported by the NEI, explores novel mechanisms and therapeutic strategies for bacterial keratitis and diabetes-induced complications to the cornea, with a focus on translational impact.
